What a beautiful day to remove the dragon boats from the containers at Octagon Pond! Lots of hands to speed up the process. Lots of excitement in the air. Our paddling season starts on Tuesday May 19th. Fingers crossed the wind will cooperate.

Last week some of our members attended the Holy Spirit High School Relay for Life. These events are so important and powerful, everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another. Thank you to Holy Spirit High School for putting off this event and inviting us. Together we are stronger.

We are so proud of our team members that are heading to France in just 100 days to participate in the IBCPC International BCS Dragon Boat Festival. This festival occurs every 4 years for breast cancer survivor teams from around the world.

It only took an hour to demonstrate that dragon boat paddlers have the skills to glide across the floor like they glide across the water! No paddles required. What a lot of fun with Colleen Hann from Kicking it Country with Colleen. Sadly, no video to prove our skills. Maybe next time.

It was such an honour to be included once again in the Relay for Life event held at Memorial University's Field House on March 21st. This annual event organized by amazing university students raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. The Avalon Dragons provided the energetic warm-up and participated in the survivor walk around the track.

Our Cardio Dance class which is always fun with Cathy from Sisters in Fitness ended with some impromptu waltzes to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!

Today is International Women's Day. Let's celebrate all the amazing women in our lives. We would like to recognize two of our members who received special awards recently. The Conception Bay Area Chamber of Commerce awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award to Jennifer Lake. And ACTRA NL honoured Doreen Reardigan. These two ladies inspire us in so many ways. Congratulations!

Registration is now open for the 2026 Paddle in Paradise dragon boat festival! It is taking place on Saturday, July 18th with Sunday, July 19th as the alternate date. Anyone can enter a team - gather your family, friends, co-workers, fellow sport competitors! You will need 18 paddlers (16 paddlers and 2 spares) and a drummer. Don't miss out on the fun!

The Avalon Dragons are sending a team to Aix-les-Bains at the heart of the French Alps for the 2026 IBCPC Participatory Dragon Boat Festival . What an experience this will be! It takes place from the 24th to the 30th of August. With our own Paddle in Paradise Festival taking place on July 18th, this promises to be an intense training season and we are up to the challenge!

January brings blustery days and cold temperatures but it also allows time to reflect on the previous year and plan for the upcoming paddling season. The annual Planning Day brought the Avalon Dragons together for a day of focused discussions, inspirational moments, warmth and camaraderie, with a fabulous pot luck lunch to boot! The Avalon Dragons are trading our life jackets for ugly Christmas sweaters and our paddles for candy canes! We might be off the water for the winter but our spirits are riding high. On Nov. 29th a group of Avalon Dragons visited Ronald McDonald House again to bake some treats for the families. It was a wonderful evening for a good cause.
